EMDR therapy helps the brain process experiences that may feel “stuck” or continue to trigger strong emotional or physical reactions. Rather than requiring you to talk through every detail of an experience repeatedly, EMDR uses a structured process that combines focused attention with bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements.
1. Understanding Your History and Goals
Your therapist begins by learning about your experiences, current concerns, and what you would like to work toward in therapy.
2. Preparation and Coping Strategies
Before processing difficult memories, your therapist helps you develop grounding and emotional regulation strategies so you feel supported throughout the process.
3. Identifying Target Memories
Together, you identify specific memories, thoughts, emotions, or experiences that may be contributing to present-day distress.
4. Bilateral Stimulation
While focusing on aspects of the experience, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation, often using side-to-side eye movements or another form of alternating stimulation.
5. Processing and Reframing
As processing takes place, the intensity of distressing memories may decrease while healthier and more adaptive perspectives begin to emerge.
6. Integration and Review
Your therapist checks in on your progress and helps integrate what has been processed into your ongoing therapeutic work.
EMDR is commonly used to support people who have experienced trauma or distressing life events. Depending on your individual needs, it may also be incorporated into therapy for concerns such as:
EMDR therapy is tailored to each person, and the pace of treatment will depend on your needs, experiences, and comfort level. Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to determine whether EMDR is an appropriate part of your treatment plan.
